Emerson PTA Committees: 2011-2012

There’s so many ways for Emerson moms and dads to get involved throughout the school year. With more 25 committees, there’s one that’s right for you. Some require only a small commitment of time. Others are active throughout the year.

Bake/Buy

When requested, send baked or bought items to school for specific functions such as Fall Fest. You’ll receive advance notice and will likely be called fewer than five times during the school year.

Book Fair

Help set-up the annual Book Fair, work during the event as a cashier and/or help pack-up when the Fair is over.

Charitable Outreach

Help plan and coordinate programs and events to teach Emerson students the value of charitable outreach locally, nationally and globally.

Chess Club

No chess knowledge required. Help supervise kids while they play every other Friday during lunch period, October thru March. Help with chess tourney in the Spring.

Curriculum Night

Help decorate tables, make centerpieces and general set-up in the gym for this annual event where parents meet with teachers and learn about what’s planned for the school year. September 2011.

Family Fitness Night

Help coordinate, set-up and run the annual event for Emerson families.

Field Day

Help run various outside games during the all-school Field Day held during one afternoon the last week of school.

Fine Arts: Music and Art

Volunteer to lead music and/or art appreciation sessions in your child’s classroom. No experience or special knowledge required. All materials provided. Coordinate times with teacher to meet with the class each month. Multiple volunteers welcome for each classroom.

Go Green!

Help plan and coordinate programs and events to build environmental awareness and promote conservation among Emerson students and their families.

Head Room Parent/Room Parent

Help in your child(ren)’s classroom(s) coordinating parties and other events. Head room parent works with the teacher and coordinates with other room parents.

Ice Cream Social

Help plan, set-up and serve ice cream at the ice cream social for parents and students during an August evening right before school starts.

Jump Rope for Heart

Jump Rope for Heart is a two-day event for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders that teaches the kids about heart health while raising money for the American Heart Association. Help run the various stations in the gym.

Junior Great Books

Volunteer to be a lead or assistant facilitator for small groups of 2nd and 3rd grade students as they read and discuss classic literature. The Jr. Great Books program meets once a week during the lunch hour for approximately eight weeks. All lead facilitators receive training and materials from the Great Books Foundations.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Give tours to incoming Kindergarten parents, answer questions and help with registration paperwork in February or March 2011.

LRC Helper

Volunteer throughout the school year to shelve books, help children checkout books and other small duties. Sign-up for timeslots in the LRC as often as you’d like.

Market Day

Help unload Market Day truck and place items on tables for pick-up. Commitment is for about one to two hours the second Tuesday of each month.

New Family Welcome

Help plan and staff this welcome event for families new to Emerson. Held in late August.

Opening Day Coffee

Help plan, set-up and staff coffee and snack service during this reception for parents on the first day of school.

Read to Succeed

Coordinate the program which features the Six Flags Six Hour Reading Club®, which encourages kids to complete six hours of recreational reading and rewards them with free admission tickets to participating Six Flags theme parks.

Rec Nights

Each grade level gathers during a specified evening to play partner games with a parent. Volunteers help run games. You will help on a night when your children are not involved. Various evenings are available during the month of January.

Running Club

In the Fall and Spring, help supervize running club members and track laps during lunch hour sessions.

School Directory

Committee members photocopy and bind directories for distribution to PTA families in mid- to late-September. Most work done during school hours in the office, over a period of two or three mornings/afternoons. No experience necessary.

School Tool Boxes

In late August 2010, help unpack and distribute school tool boxes for the 2010-2011 school year. This one-time commitment takes 1 to 3 hours on one day in the school gym. Some manual lifting involved (up to 30 lbs).

Spring Fling

Help set-up after school for the annual Spring Fest, staff a game for one-half hour and/or clean-up after the event.

Teacher Appreciation

Committee members assemble and distribute crafts and gifts presented to teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, and help set-up and run a special luncheon honoring our teachers on specified day during the week. Either meet at school or someone’s home several times in April and May. Times and project TBD. Some projects may be done independently of the group. No experience or creativity necessary, but certainly welcome. 

Vision/Hearing Screening

Walk children from classroom to vision and hearing screening.  Walk them back to classroom.  Dates TBD.

Yearbook

Provide supervision during lunchtime meetings for 5th graders working on the yearbook. No experience necessary, nor do you need to have a 5th grader. For the curious, training is provided in Microsoft Publisher and Excel. Meetings with interested 5th graders scheduled for Mondays. Fewer meetings in the beginning of the year; more frequent ones held following Winter Break. In late April and early May, meetings may occur as often as every day to meet the “to press” deadline. Distribution scheduled for the final week of school.
